With the re-opening of the Norton after a three week hiatus, the Museum’s Family Studio resumes its new weekly schedule and reduced cost, which was initiated last June thanks to a generous gift made by Damon and Katherine Mezzacappa.
Led by a teaching artist and a docent, the Family Studio program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday. It is structured so families with children ages 5 through 12, can create art together. Each Studio is limited to 25 children, and is generally themed to coincide with a special exhibition or works from the Museum Collection, and includes viewing artwork before creating your own. Advance registration is required. Call (561) 832-5196 x1196, or visit www.norton.org/familystudio.
With the Mezzacappas’ support, the Museum expanded Family Studio from the first Saturday of the month to every Saturday. The gift also provides free admission to all Palm Beach County residents every Saturday through June of 2017. While the number of Family Studios dramatically increased, the cost of participating dramatically decreased from $8 to $1 per child – no matter where they live. Sadly, Mr. Mezzacappa passed away since the couple made this transformative gift. The Norton Museum is deeply grateful for the family’s support, and proud to be a part of Mr. Mezzacappa’s remarkable legacy.
The Family Studio program was launched in 2003 to provide families with kid-friendly tours based on the Museum Collection and special exhibitions, followed by art-making activities that combine what kids learned on the tour with their own creativity. Museum docents and staff collaborate to make the tour and art activity a seamless two-hour exploration of art and fun shared by adults and children.
