West Palm Beach is home to a community of talented local artists who have been painting the empty walls of downtown buildings for years, imprinting a seal of artistic authenticity that reflects the vibrant art scene of a city packed with art galleries and recurring annual art programs that feature colossal art fairs, acclaimed traveling exhibits, cultural attractions, pop-ups, sculptures, and installations shaping the community’s artistic identity.
I remember that, back in early 2015, Cuban-born artist and long-time West Palm Beach resident Anthony Hernandez’s striking murals dominated the art scene downtown – JFK, wearing mirrored sunglasses, hovered over a parking lot on Datura, and palm trees swayed in his reflected vision. Punk hero Joey Ramone and Velvet Underground Kingpin Lou Reed were once on the entire outer wall of the Respectable Street bar and nightclub at 518 Clematis Street.
