The Shard: Awesome Inspiration to Change

"Discovering" By Emma Hulley - The WPB Magazine weekly section that takes you around the world's most impressive cities.

Taking inspiration from the spires of London churches and the masts of tall ships depicted by the 18th-century Venetian painter Canaletto, The Shard was designed as a spire-like sculpture emerging from the River Thames.

This building, one of the tallest in Europe has been an awesome inspiration to change in vertical architecture. A diverse vibrant community with multiple areas including retail, offices, hotel, apartments, restaurants and a public viewing gallery where the public can experience magnificent views. Some people might find tall buildings aggressive, like fortresses within our wonderful space, but cities with a strikingly impressive views of its surrounding should consider providing its residents and visitors with high-risers that could depict “daunting panoramic vistas“. Such is the case of The Shard, a project that overcame a lengthy planning process, a high-profile public inquiry, and exhilarating construction phases but at the end the beauty of the Thames and the energy of London are the captivating hosts this building invites to discover.

The Shard, also referred to as the Shard of Glass, whose color and mood are constantly changing according to the weather and seasons, has been a beautiful addition to the London skyline. Its view and architecture are premium attractions to visitors in London. It has redefined London’s skyline and become a dynamic symbol of the city. Millions of people visit the Shard each year, reporting a substantial uplift in business.

The Shard is an amazing accomplishment for a historic center and the building is both heroic on the skyline and beautifully executed at the scale of the pedestrian, clearly prioritizing public transportation over the automobile.

The South Bank of the Thames has always played a significant role in the rise of London as a world city and the Shard reinvented the city’s hub for retail scenery. The Shard is a timeless reminder of the power of imagination to inspire change.

Next time you plan your vacations, this might be a winning suggestion for a stop at the old continent”.
