1Last February, a simple set of keys meant much more than just a house in Lantana. For one Palm Beach County father and his 10-year-old daughter, they stood for stability, opportunity, and a future made possible by the support of their whole community.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County recently celebrated the dedication of a new home for the family, marking an emotional milestone that took years to achieve. Surrounded by volunteers, sponsors, and supporters, the ceremony honored not only the finished house but also the hard work and teamwork that made it happen.
Publix Super Markets Charities sponsored the home, and their ongoing support for local neighborhoods has helped many families become homeowners in the area. At the dedication, Publix representatives gave Habitat for Humanity a $300,000 check to help build more homes in Palm Beach County through 2026.
For the father, who grew up in South Florida, this moment meant a lot. Inspired by his mother, the first in their family to own a home, he worked full time while completing Habitat’s homeowner education program and spent hundreds of hours building alongside volunteers. His hard work gave him the chance to buy the home through Habitat with a 30-year, interest-free mortgage, making him the second homeowner in his family.
But the biggest surprise of the day was inside the house.
When the family walked through the front door for the first time, they found a home that was not just newly built but also fully furnished and carefully decorated. Employees from iTHINK Financial had secretly turned the space into a move-in-ready home, complete with furniture, bedding, kitchen supplies, and decorations chosen for the family.
The father’s love for the Miami Dolphins and University of Miami Hurricanes showed in the sports-themed details around the house. His daughter’s bedroom was decorated in bright blue and pink, with fun Lilo & Stitch touches
The transformation made the house feel personal right away, creating a place where memories could begin from the very first night.
This project shows how Habitat for Humanity’s team approach brings together community partners, volunteers, and future homeowners to build affordable homes in Palm Beach County. Along with Publix Super Markets Charities and iTHINK Financial, other supporters included Palm Beach County, Carrier, Comcast, Moraca Builders, Inc., and Fitzhugh Holdings, each helping with different parts of the home’s construction and finishing touches.
For Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County, moments like this show the broader impact of affordable housing, which goes far beyond a single home.
“This home represents stability, dignity, and opportunity,” said Jennifer Thomason, president and CEO of the organization, during the ceremony.
For this father and daughter, getting the keys that morning marked the start of a new chapter, built on hard work, community support, and hope for a brighter future.
